Root CanalsWhat is a root canal?Root canals are the long passages full of soft tissue deep within the dentin of a tooth, adjoining the pulp chamber. In dentistry, a pulpectomy is an endodontic treatment to cure an infection of the root canal; informally a root canal. A root canal, coupled with internal tooth bleaching, is also used to fix teeth that have blackened because of infiltration of decayed soft tissue into the dentin in the teeth, most often seen in incisors ( a type of front tooth) that have been injured through a sudden impact. (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_canal) Benefits of a Root Canal ProcedureNormally the justification of having a root canal done is due to the offending tooth is causing you pain. What happens is the dentist (usually an endodontist) will do the procedure on that offending tooth. When it's all done, the nerve that's connected to the tooth is no longer present, thus ensuring that you no longer have the pain. Root canals are usually done when you have a pain in that tooth and it can be saved. Otherwise, an extraction must be performed - the tooth causing you to be in pain gets pulled. Yes, it won't be pleasant and I've been through three of them. My Experience With Root CanalsWhen I first heard of this term, I never understood what it was. All I remembered was I have a toothache and having it pulled was all I remembered about being relieved from it. However, I also recalled that the dentist who worked with me was he gave me some anesthesia, drilled my tooth, put something that looked like wires between the drilled walls inside that tooth. Then he plugged up the drilled hole in my tooth with some fillings and later told me not to eat for two-three hours. Other NotesI was told by my cousin, a dentist, that a root canal job can be a messy job, so you should make sure that when you go to get a root canal, make sure you call call member services or you can find out yourself a provider that specializes in endodontics. Endodontists are the dentists that perform root canal procedures. Most general dentists can perform these procedures, but if not performed properly, it can be a big mess.
